Gift Ideas

Buying Christmas Gifts is never easy. Year in year out many shoppers inevitably find themselves hunting through the shops on Christmas Eve in a last minute frenzy searching for presents. It’s supposed to be the one time of year where most people are guaranteed a break from work and in theory a week’s holiday. However, by the time you have decorated the house, done the food shopping and cooking, bought all your gifts wrapped them and placed them under the tree, it does not give you much time to relax. This is of course without taking into account the cleanup process, taking down the decorations and ultimately New Years Eve which brings with it a guaranteed hangover the next day. So by the end of the holiday season you often find yourselves starting the New Year absolutely exhausted; and who can blame you?

Since the invention of the internet, or more specifically internet shopping, preparing for the Christmas season has become easier and a lot less stressful. We no longer need to leave our homes to buy the food, decorations, presents or even the Christmas tree. Everything can be done at the click of a button and the best part is that it is all delivered to your front door, often free of charge. No more long queues and fighting for your place in line. No more sitting in the heavy traffic outside shopping centres for hours. Instead from the comfort of your bed, sofa, kitchen or even bathroom you can search the internet for those perfect gifts.

So the only problem remaining is finding that ideal present. When shopping for women, if you are not sure what to buy, then you can always go for items such as the latest perfume, designer handbag or a signed copy of a book by a well known author. These kinds of presents are usually fairly safe bets: you can guarantee that you didn’t buy them the same item last year, if it’s a fairly recent release they’re unlikely to own it yet, and most importantly of all while they are fairly generic items they are usually guaranteed to please.

Buying gifts for men on the other hand is a whole different ball game. They don’t care much for fashion, aren’t really bothered about owning the latest after shave or cologne and when it comes to reading they prefer magazines about sports, automobiles or computing.

The one thing that they are interested in is gadgets. Many companies cunningly choose Christmas to release their latest ground-breaking inventions; however, the problem is the prices are rarely consumer-friendly. Due to the large number of relatives and friends we usually have to buy Christmas presents for, Christmas shopping stretches the budget quite quickly, meaning that you just can’t afford those latest cutting edge gadgets.

So year in year out, we end up back looking through clothes stores for socks, ties, belts, pyjamas and shirts. It’s not very original and the lack of options available means you can easily end up buying the same present two years running without realising it.

In recent years all these problems have been resolved by a new breed of present. It might look fairly small, flat and plain when sat under the Christmas tree, however, once opened it will certainly be one of the more exciting gifts. It’s only a sheet of paper that fits into a small envelope; however, it is what it represents that makes it so exciting. Activity and Experience Days allow the recipient of the voucher the chance to spend a day doing something different that they have always wanted to do. The activities are usually quite outrageous, and in some cases dangerous, which is precisely what makes them so appealing to adrenaline hungry men.

Activity and experience days are slowly becoming all the rage. When they were first released they tended to include pursuits such as flying lessons. While this may satisfy many men’s childhood dreams, it is an expensive hobby to learn and maintain; even a one off lesson could easily cost in the range of £100. So for those on a budget the activity or experience day did not herald the answer.

More recently this has started to change. With their popularity spreading, activity days have become cheaper and the range of sports and activities available has increased immensely. This in turn has increased the chances of finding something within your price range.

Buy-a-gift, one of the originators of the experience day in the UK, now offer gifts for all ages (from children to pensioners); for both men and women; and for couples and families. These range from holidays for two, paintballing, dinner or lunch out in London, sightseeing events, motor racing or just a relaxing spa trip. There are so many different experience days to choose from that you are guaranteed to find the right one at the right price.

For example a power boating experience will set you back approximately £30, while a helicopter lesson will cost approximately £50. Obviously the prices will vary depending on where you shop, but if you choose to search online for activity days you should find that they are usually very competitively priced.

The men’s activity days do tend to revolve around extreme sports or driving experiences, but for those looking for something a bit more relaxed the options include activities like sailing and golfing. On the other hand the women’s experience days appear to consist mainly of relaxing activities such as spa trips, pampering, make-up classes and weekends away. However, this is not necessarily the case. Although the options might not include jumping out of a plane, they are still quite adventurous in some cases; for example pole dancing lessons.

So now when it comes to choosing a Christmas present for your father, brother, grandfather, or boyfriend, instead of buying socks and pyjamas you can treat them to something that they should thoroughly enjoy. It may only last a day, but the memories will last a lifetime. After all it’s not every day we get to learn how to fly a helicopter, test drive an Aston Martin or attempt bungee jumping.
